While in Africa
This trip was one of those interesting juxtaposed journeys.
I was commissioned (along with several other photographers) to accompany groups of; "Corporate Types" for a couple months while they Experienced this incredible country and beautiful people.
There I was, a rough and tumble photojournalist in far away Kenya to record these seemingly uncomfortable travelers on this adventure of a lifetime.
Fortunately, I was able to escape to the open plains of the Mara; sans the folks distracted with the buffet and open bar.
There were a couple of the Safari drivers that took notice. A slight tap on my shoulder; with a nod we would fade into the shadows. With a toothy grin, "Tonight we will find a kill".
The highlight was (for this self-proclaimed amateur, Anthropologist) were the weekly visits to the Masai Villages.
I was truly moved with the warmth, the embrace I received, (this did take several visits), but once the trust was realized, we became family: (of man).
On one especially memorable moment, the village Elder came to me, with a smile/laugh, he handed me a rather large knife, a club and a staff: He informed: "I would always be safe".
To this day, I have stashed in my Vintage Land Cruiser, that club...I feel pretty darn safe, I do.
